Fresh seafood in the Whitsundays

IMAGINE fresh, locally-caught seafood delivered direct to your door. Sound too good to be true? Not anymore.Seafood Company Fishi has partnered with home-delivery business Food Porter to do just that for Whitsunday residents.Fishi has been run by husband-and-wife team Matt and Bronwyn Calder, on Hamilton Island, for the past three years.Becoming a provider of fresh, locally-caught seafood to mainland residents is the next step in their business journey.

“The Food Porter model really fits with our company ethos of delivering fresh, wild-caught seafood straight to the customer’s door,” Matt said.“That has always been our ethos on Hamilton Island and now we are able to do that for residents on the mainland as well.” The business runs two boats – its own commercial line-fishing boat and a prawn trawler owned by local fisherman James Day and run under the ‘Whitsunday Wild’ brand in conjunction with Fishi.

“We promote our own product but we buy and source as much again from local fishermen in the area,” Matt said, adding the business also supplies local restaurants.“The prawn trawler goes out for two weeks at a time and comes back with not just prawns but long-tail bugs (Moreton Bay bugs), blue swimmer crabs, Queensland scallops, cuttlefish and octopus.”Fishi, which is a member of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s ‘Reef Guardian’ program, also trades in an abundance of different fish, as well as crayfish, lobster and scampi.

“This is a new venture for us and we are very excited,” Matt continued. “If things go well we will certainly look at adding additional items to the menu. We have just started doing a lunch pack for $18, which is going well on the island and might also work on the mainland.  “We just want to keep doing what we’ve done since we started our business and that’s delivering amazing seafood product direct to the customer’s door.” The fresh, ready-to-eat seafood platters (cooked and prepared) that can be ordered through Food Porter include the following (prices are per person).

A little note from Michelle

This Month we feature in Whitsundays First Food Magazine, SPLURGE Food Australia, a new venture by Foodporter brought to you with one special idea: To give you a unique taste of the culture surrounding our authentic cuisine.

And how will we do that? First of all, by offering you with an insight into our farming culture, taking you behind the scenes of the restaurants, and introducing you to the people that have chosen the creative career behind the stainless steel shelves and burners.

We will also give you lots of recipes & tips, showcase food galore, and let you have a peek at the menus available in the area that can be delivered to your door by Foodporter in case you don’t feel like venturing out.
I would like to personally thank all the Contributors & Advertisers for supporting my vision and helping me make SPLURGE a reality. I hope that you will enjoy reading through these pages as much as I enjoyed assembling them.

One last thing: I am thrilled to announce that you will be hearing back from us in December when we will be releasing our Summer issue, keep tuned in as I release more articles and content from the magazine and what out for your copy distributed in every household in Airlie Beach, Jubilee Pocket and Cannonvale.
